STUDY No.18 - THE COMFORTER - JOHN 14:15-31

Read the passage slowly two or three times to grasp the general content, preferably using the Authorised Version (referred to below as AV).

Find the names given to the Holy Spirit. It’s a good idea to write them out.

Then spend a little time thinking about the significance of each of these names. What do they each tell us about the Holy Spirit? WE SHOULD LEARN TO VALUE HIS MINSTRY

1. Are there PROMISES in this passage?
            (a) regarding the Holy Spirit?
            (b) regarding other matters?

2. What would you say is the PRINCIPAL POINT of this passage?

3. Can you find a clear lesson of PERSONAL PROFIT for YOU today?

4. Can you find a SIN that should be forsaken?

5. Can you find a COMMAND that ought to be obeyed?

6. Can you find an EXAMPLE to be followed?

Further points

1. Note the use of personal pronouns referring to the Holy Spirit (verses 16, l7):
'he', 'him', 'him', 'he'. He is a Person.
  • He can be lied to - Acts 5:3
  • He can select - Acts 13:2
  • 2. Gather from our passage (John 14:15-21) andJohn 16:7-14, some things that the Holy Spirit does for us in our Christian lives.

    3. There are two references in the AV (Romans 8:16, 26) in which the word ‘itself' occurs in relation to the Holy Spirit Those who question the AV often raise these as a poor translation. In actual fact the AV is grammatically correct in these instances. See ‘he’ again in verse 27.

    4. Verse 17 became true after Pentecost. Before Pentecost the Holy Spirit came upon a man - or with a man.

    5. Three vital building-blocks of the "abundant life" promised by the Lord Jesus Christ, and given to the believer:

  • My peace -John 14:27
  • My love - John 15:10
  • My joy - John 15:11

  •

What more can a Christian want?

    Holy Spirit, peace divine
Still this restless heart of mine,
Speak to calm this tossing sea,
    Stayed in Thy tranquillity.
    Holy Spirit, love divine,
Glow within this heart of mine.
    Kindly every high desire.
Perish self in Thy pure fire.

    Holy Spirit, joy divine,
Gladden Thou this heart of mine,
In the desert ways I’ll sing,
Spring, 0 well, for ever spring
